ACCESS AND CREDENTIALING FAQs

General Questions:

The airport is operated by the Charleston County Aviation Authority under a joint-use agreement with Joint Base Charleston. It is South Carolina’s largest and busiest airport.

The Charleston County Aviation Authority is governed by an 11-member board. The South Carolina House and Senate delegations representing Charleston County each nominate three members (approved by the governor) and one member is jointly appointed by the Charleston County Council and the Charleston City Council. The mayors of the City of Charleston, City of North Charleston and Town of Mount Pleasant and the chairman of Charleston County Council serve as ex-officio board members. Members are appointed to four-year terms.
The airport is staffed and occupied by the Charleston County Aviation Authority 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. Even in the event of inclement weather conditions, a combination of the CCAA team is always on the job.

Rarely do the runways close due to weather conditions; nevertheless, every endeavor is undertaken to minimize disruption to airport operations. The responsibility for determining whether to proceed with take-offs or landings in uncertain weather primarily rests with individual airlines. Therefore, reports of “airport closure” may not always be accurate. Decisions regarding runway closures are made by Joint Base Charleston and the FAA. Any updates will be promptly communicated through our social media platforms and website.
Your airline will be able to assist you with wheelchair help! Let your airline know if you require this service when making your reservation. Once at the Airport, check in with and airline employee or airport representative inside the terminal, and a wheelchair will be provided for you. You can also contact your airline directly to plan ahead.

Yes, Charleston’s in-house Curbside Check-In Service “CHS Check n’ Go” is open and located on the front curb and on the second floor of the daily parking deck. The following airlines allow curbside check in: Alaska, American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, and United.
Procedures regarding gate passes for unaccompanied minors and elderly adults vary by airline. Please contact your airline for their policy. Please visit the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) website for complete information on Military Family gate passes.
The airport is open 24 hours a day; however, amenities in the airport have individual hours—shop and restaurant hours are listed in our shopping and dining directories. The security checkpoint will close after the last flight of the night and will reopen at 4 a.m. daily.
We’re working hard to add new destinations for our travelers regularly! In fact, we’ve doubled our destinations list in the last two years! We’ll certainly pass your suggestion along to our Air Service Development team. We’re regularly announcing fun things on social media, so make sure you’re following along! We’re @iflychs on all channels.
We find that many AV-Geeks fancy the top of our newest parking deck for plane spotting! Please note that if you stop along Aviation Ave for plane spotting you will be asked to move as it is private property. We’d love for you to share your photos with us on social though! We’re @IflyCHS on all channels.
Currently we do not have a permanent office for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck at CHS but we do host pop-up events at CHS throughout the year. We will share on social media if there are any events coming up, so be sure to follow along! We’re @iflychs on all channels.

Lost And Found:

We’re sorry to hear that! Please check with your airline directly as they handle their own lost and founds. If you would like to make an inquiry with our lost and found as well, please visit www.iflychs.com/lostandfound/ to file a claim.
The Charleston County Aviation Authority (CCAA) maintains a Lost and Found office for items found in the Charleston International Airport (CHS) terminal and CHS parking facilities. We have teamed up with Boomerang, a lost and found software, to ensure passengers promptly retrieve lost items. Travelers can
access the service through this link or QR codes located throughout the airport. If CHS has your item, you will receive an email containing instructions for the item’s return shipping.

TSA & Security:

While Charleston International Airport’s average TSA wait time is only 12 minutes, we recommend arriving 90 minutes before your scheduled boarding time to check your bags, get through security, and relax before your flight.
Please refer to TSA’s “What Can I Bring?” webpage here: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/securityscreening/ whatcanibring/all. If that does not answer your question we recommend reaching out to them directly. They are very responsive on Twitter, @askTSA. Safe travels!
We’re so sorry to hear about your experience at CHS. We have made Charleston’s TSA Director aware of your message and we are working to correct it. If you have any further questions please contact TSA directly by calling 866-289-9673 or email contactcenter@dhs.gov.\

Parking:

Our parking deck is accessible to persons with special needs and has designated handicapped parking available. CHS provides 48 hours (two days) free handicap parking to qualified parking patrons. After two days, the prevailing rates of either the parking deck or the surface parking will be charged. To qualify for free parking, present a valid handicap placard and driver’s license, both of which must be issued by the same state, to the cashier at the time of exit. The licensed driver and person pictured on the handicap vehicle must be in the car at the time of exit to qualify for the free parking.
Since the opening of our newest parking deck, parking spaces have not been an issue at CHS. During peak travels times, such as Thanksgiving or Christmas, when our lots start to fill up we will open an overflow lot to travelers.
The cell phone waiting lot provides free temporary parking to better assist passengers with pick-up. The cell phone waiting lot is located on the right-side International Blvd, just before arriving to the terminal.
